SAILING AWAY WITH SUZANNE
Suzanne Bourke from Sailing Away sailing school has spent much of the winter working for a premier RYA training school in Croatia teaching in the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean. LUCKY THING!
Her arrival home to Auckland was a relief to many people wishing to complete the RYA training here in Auckland this summer….. she’s having strong bookings at the moment, so if you’re looking for a refresher or the full RYA certificate course… CALL soon.

COLIN’S CORNER
Members concern me with their habits surrounding the gas bottles on the boats. Remember please that gas is one of the higher danger issues on a boat and should remain turned OFF AT THE BOTTLE when not in use and please do ensure it’s turned off before leaving the boat.
As we move into summer it’s critical to do your part by making sure you refuel the boat… this means a top up from your 10ltr container for the yachts and all powerboats must be taken to Caltex at Orams for refueling. Keep in mind if the fuel pump doesn’t accept your cards at Caltex, then 5 minutes away at Bayswater marina is a BP floating fuel dock… just follow the navigation buoys to get to the marina dock. When using these unfamiliar jetties such as the one at Bayswater or Kawau/Barrier etc… make sure you deploy all the fenders.. it really saves on scratches or worse!
Every year we seem to get pinged by Maritime NZ due to members not completing enough information in the log books… the more information the better please… and do fill in your full name when completing the skipper section.
CHARTS CHARTS CHARTS…. The only completely accurate navigation aid. One should always have the appropriate paper chart to hand when skippering. We’re very keen on you staying away from rocks etc especially now the insurance excess has gone to $5000. If you need some brushing up on chart skills, I’m only too happy to assist or perhaps a boatmaster course is in order?
Don’t forget to hose down the exterior of the boat with water before leaving it… one area to note is the anchor, chain and locker, does this need a bit of a scrub?
And finally… the berthing of the boats… you’ve been taught the skills, but I’m happy to provide a refresher if you’re at all concerned….
Plan the maneuver, Where is the wind going to push you, Do you have enough run up to get the angles right?, Are your crew ready with boat hooks and have they been instructed prior to commencement?
Thanks for reading this long epistle, however I’m looking forward to a quiet/non-breakage summer!
Colin
NAUTICAL LINGO
An ensign on sea duty for the first time overheard a recruit say he was going downstairs. “Listen, sailor," he snarled, "Downstairs is below, that side is starboard, that's aft and that's portside. If I ever hear you say one more civilian word like "downstairs" again I'll throw you through that little round window over there!"
